The Hierophant from The Rider/Waite/Smith Deck

Every reader has that one card that just seems to elude them - say hello to mine. I know the meaning behind it and I recognize the symbolism within the card, but I just can’t connect with this one as deeply as I would like! Today, I had this amazing “tarot coaching” session with someone who wanted to know more about the cards herself and she asked me about this one and I just started laughing. The Hierophant is so elusive! He holds the fundamental knowledge of all things spiritual and divine. He is seen distilling this information in the card. But, to me, he feels rigid and ambivalent - like he’s holding back - testing us. But, perhaps that essence is the important piece of the card. Structure and full knowledge of a situation are quintessentially important before moving forward in that realm, but sometimes this can feel evasive. There is a kind of a test we all must face to get to the next level of what we want in our lives. I think the Hierophant is, perhaps, a no-nonsense reminder that we need spiritual fundamentals and structure to pass through every day challenges. He’s got that knowledge and we’ve got to get it from him! One of my favorite thing about the cards is that there is always more to learn and discover within each one. Hierophant has reminded me of that today.
